England bowlers were
given a thorough workout by hosts Haryana who closed the second day of
the final warm-up match in Ahmedabad on 172-4.
England, who take on India in the first Test next week, earlier
posted 521 and the bowlers were then made to work hard for their
wickets. Tim Bresnan
struck to remove opener Nitin Saini for 13 - with Nick Compton taking
the catch - but Sunny Singh (55) and Rahul Dewan (77no) put on 97 for
the second wicket.Singh finally fell to the spin of Samit Patel
by Jonathan Trott, and Abhimanyu Khod made just three before he became Bresnan's second victim, Trott again holding the catch.Sachin Rana scored a painstaking seven off 28 balls before falling lbw to Monty Panesar but defiant Dewan was still there at the close, having faced 181 balls so far.
Earlier Patel (66) added England's fifth half-century of the match as runs continued flow after the tourists had posted a mammoth 408-4 on the first day.
Ian Bell
added just five to his overnight 57no before he was caught at slip
after advancing to Rana but Patel and Matt Prior (41) added a brisk
sixth-wicket stand of 69.The tail failed to wag, the last five wickets falling for just 14 runs but the top seven will go into next week's first Test with plenty of runs in the bank.
Some good news for the England attack was the sight of Steven Finn in full flight in the nets.
Finn has played just an hour of cricket on the tour so far after suffering a thigh injury, but he bowled off a full run up as his fellow bowlers were put through their paces in the middle.
