South Africa made Australia's bowlers toil on day one of the opening Test in Brisbane.

Alviro Petersen and Jacques Kallis all scored well as the Proteas reached stumps on 255-2.Only captain Graeme Smith
failed to get amongst the runs, with the opener trapped leg before - via a review - by James Pattinson for just 10.Having won the toss and opted to bat, South Africa
made slow progress initially, with the loss of Smith - who had been
targeted as an lbw risk by the Aussies according to leaked reports of
their tactics - giving the hosts some early hope.Amla, who had tormented England in the summer, had to survive some uncomfortable moments, particularly from Pattinson, before finally getting into his stride.
From 29-1, South Africa moved along steadily to 119 before Peterson was dismissed attempting to cut loose.
Having needed 99 balls to reach his half-century, Peterson tried to shake off the shackles - and although Ben Hilfenhaus
and Peter Siddle were smashed to the boundary, he mistimed a delivery from Nathan Lyon and was caught by Mike Hussey for 64.Amla, though, maintained his progress - bringing up his 50 off 108 balls with a typically elegant cover drive.
Kallis wasted little time in making his mark, pulling Lyon for six as he scored at will. His half-century came off 63 balls.
Amla did offer up one chance when on 74 but Siddle couldn't hold on to a caught and bowled chance - and the century partnership for the third wicket soon followed.
And both Amla and Kallis looked set to reach their centuries before the end of the day, only for bad light to curtail play with eight overs remaining. Amla, who passed the landmark 5,000 Test runs earlier, was unbeaten on 90, while Kallis was 84 not out.
