This weekend saw 31 Premier League goals scored. Manchester
City got the weekends action underway on Saturday afternoon in a fixture
which last season saw them dominate Sunderland but fail to find the
net.
Sunderland would score very late on and give City a title scare. It
wasn’t to be this time though as Aleksandr Kolarov scored another free
kick before assisting Sergio Aguero before James Milner rounded up a 3-0
win for City.
This set the tone for Title rivals Chelsea who hosted Norwich at
Stamford Bridge and Chelsea replied in great style. Going behind after
11 minutes to Grant Holts first of the season for Norwich, Fernando
Torres equalised minutes later, only for Chelsea to dominate and win the
match 4-1 with Frank Lampard, Eden Hazard and free scoring defender
Branislav Ivanovic adding to their tally. Ivanovic now has 3 for the
season, and for a defender that’s not bad at all!
The other 3pm kick offs on Saturday saw Swansea battle back from 0-2
down at Home to Reading to draw 2-2. Michu continuing his impressive
scoring tally to start the comeback for Swansea. West Brom continued
their good start to the season with a 3-2 win over struggling Q.P.R.
Esteban Granero, Zoltan Gera and Youssouf Mulumbu amongst the
goalscorers in a high scoring entertaining game at the hawthorns. In the
last of the 3pm kick offs, Wigan held high flying Everton to a 2-2 draw
but were ahead until Leighton Baines tucked away an 89th minute penalty. Nikita Jelavic equalised in the 11th
minute seconds after Arouna Kone had put Wigan infront, Franco di Santo
made it 2-1 to Wigan and that’s how it would remain for the best part
of the game.
The late kick off saw Arsenal travel to Upton Park where they made hard work of beating West Ham 1-3. Diame giving West Ham a 21st
minute lead which they held until Olivier Giroud scored a poachers goal
before half time. Arsenal left it late to round up the victory, Theo
Walcott scoring before the 80th minute and Santi Cazorla rounding up the scoring 5 minutes later.
With Arsenal, City and Chelsea all collecting wins, the pressure was
on Manchester United to overcome last season’s 3-0 demise to Newcastle
and take all 3 points but it was Southampton and Fulham who got the
football underway on Sunday, playing out a 2-2 draw which the Saints
manager may see as 2points lost rather than 1 gained. José Fonte scored
in the opening and closing moments of the game to rescue a point after
Southampton conceded and own goal and Kieran Richardson thought he had
won the game for Fulham in the 88th minute.
The 2 midday games saw Liverpool and Stoke battle it out in a violent
0-0 draw with Luis Suarez at the central of accusations of diving and
play acting and Stoke receiving 5 yellow cards whilst Tottenham beat
Aston Villa 2-0, with Brad Friedels surprise exclusion after 310
consecutive Premier League Appearance the highlight. Hugo Lloris
received his Premier League debut and was mostly a spectator with Aston
Villa showing poor quality of football.
The big game of the afternoon saw Manchester United overcome their
3-0 defeat gloom to turn the result around and easily brush aside a
lacklustre Newcastle side. Wayne Rooney put in an excellent performance
whilst Jonny Evans, Patrice Evra and Tom Cleverely were all surprise
inclusions on the scoresheet.
The weekends result see Chelsea sit 4points ahead of Manchester United in 2nd whilst Manchester City sit 3rd
on goal difference, 1 point ahead of Everton, Tottenham and West Brom.
Q.P.R currently occupy bottom of the table, 1 point adrift of Norwich
and Reading.http://full-timewhistle.com/2012/10/08/premier-league-round-up-gameweek-7/
