Ricky Ponting managed just eight as Australia lost the third Test to South Africa

Ricky Ponting's international career ended on a disappointing note when he was dismissed for eight in Australia's 309-run third Test defeat to South Africa in Perth.

Ponting, who managed just four in the first innings, couldn't save the day in his last hurrah, caught at slip three balls before lunch as Australia lurched to defeat in the match and 1-0 in the series.
Chasing 632 for victory, Australia began the day on 40-0 but were soon in trouble when David Warner (29) nicked Vernon Philander to Graeme Smith at slip from the second ball of the day.
Shane Watson went after the Proteas attack but departed for 25 as Smith claimed another catch in the slips, this time off Morne Morkel.
That brought Ponting to the crease with the opposition forming a guard of honour to the wicket, but his stay was agonisingly short as his attempted cut off Robin Peterson flew straight to Jacques Kallis.
Ed Cowan looked defiant in reaching his half-century but departed for 53 when Dean Elgar took the catch off Dale Steyn, while Michael Clarke's resistance ended on 44, stumped by AB de Villiers off Peterson.
Australia were haemorrhaging wickets and Michael Hussey was next to fall to Steyn for 26, while Matthew Wade (10) was caught by Smith off Peterson.
Mitchell Johnson managed just three before he was caught behind off Philander, while Smith claimed his fourth catch as he combined with Morkel to remove John Hastings for 20.
With nothing to lose, Australia's final pair went out swinging - with Mitchell Starc, in particular, making the most of the situation.
