Morgan Allen's try
two minutes from time earned Ospreys a 33-27 win over Gloucester in a
rollercoaster LV= Cup clash at the Liberty Stadium.
Gloucester
scored two converted tries in the last 10 minutes to overturn a 26-13
deficit but Ospreys created one final chance and Allen crashed over. Two experimental sides were evenly matched during a first half which ended with the hosts leading 15-13, despite their front row problems which handed Gloucester three scrum penalties.
Teenager Billy Burns kicked two penalties for Gloucester and Matthew Morgan replied with a penalty and a drop-goal, before Ospreys paid for one penalty offence too many and James King was sin-binned, with Yann Thomas immediately crashing over and Burns converting for a 13-6 lead.
But Ospreys roared back with a drop-goal and two more penalties from Morgan, before completely dominating the second half in the driving rain.
Gloucester paid heavily for their frequent indiscipline as Pete Buxton was sin-binned and Morgan and his replacement Sam Davies - son of Gloucester boss Nigel - knocked over penalties.
Just past the hour mark Ospreys opted to put a penalty into the corner and quick ball off the top went the width of the pitch before Davies' superb cut-out pass put Tom Grabham sliding in at the corner.
Gloucester looked beaten but they scored from their only two opportunities of the half to turn the game on its head.
First Dan Murphy dived through an unprotected ruck to score under the posts and three minutes later referee David Rose quite rightly awarded a penalty try as a Gloucester rolling maul was dragged down as it headed inexorably for the try-line.
All Gloucester needed to do was deal with the re-start, but they failed and handed Ospreys a lineout just outside the 22. They seized their chance as Allen burst through towards the posts, supported and kept on his feet by his pack colleagues as he was swept over to score the winning points.
